New VGS

  • The new VGS system doesn't seem like a good call imo.
I don't particularly care about cutting out the excess voice lines, or the wheel (which is kinda nice for noobs I suppose), but the placement of some of those lines makes them difficult to use QUICKLY.

There are some things that aren't very logical as compared to the old version; for example:
    Enemy positions:
VVR1/2/3 are for when enemies are left, mid, or left... but when they're behind you it's VBQ. These are adefinitely the same 'type' of alert, yet why do they not all follow the VVR format?
VVGL made more sense just looking at the letters than VCQQ. "Good Luck = GL" as I saw it. What's QQ stand for? Things like this help people remember, when (coincidental) parallels can be drawn... there are absolutely NO parallels here, I can't think of a single one.
VVF1/2/3 to attack, why 'F'? VA made sense (A=attack). Same with defend; why VVQ over VD? D made sense. (also they're a whole extra step, and are longer when ironically this was supposed to be quicker and/or easier)
VVT (thanks) and VVS (sorry) were easy to remember compared to VCFR and VCEF... And if you swap the F and E to VCFE sorry becomes "you rock", on such a simply slip of the memory. Not even once did I have that with the old VGS, in 2.5+ years of playing Paladins.

It's like switching the brakes and accelerator on a car. It's muscle memory, people who've been driving for years KNOW where everything is, they don't think about it at all. Doesn't matter if it's more "logical" in your mind, people just don't think that way. VGS is probably not going to be used at all by many veteran players because of this. After a whole week of trying to find some logic or pattern behind this to help me remember it, I could not. Tbh; I think I may end up being one of those people who'd rather stop to type in the middle of a fight than use VGS, because it's just quicker to do so.

This is one of those "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" scenarios.

I don't think this was made with veteran players in mind at all. Noobs will look at the wheel/list to see what they want to say. Your most loyal players never do. We already KNOW where everything is, it's muscle memory, and it became muscle memory because it was logical and intuitive. I can honestly not see this ever becoming muscle memory. I am having a hard time understanding why specific things were chosen. Why VVF for attack? What was the motivation for that specific format? If we can't understand why specific sequences were chosen, it becomes increasingly hard to remember them when we find no logic behind the decision.

I'd rather stop and type in the middle of a fight than use the new VGS, because I know I can do that quicker than VGS. I have legit typed "VHS" in regular chat in game with total random players in comp, and they knew exactly what that meant. That's what VGS was, a language. We all understood the language right off the bat, we didn't need anything but the letters to know what it meant. If someone typed VBE instead of using VGS, we knew to look behind us. We understood the language. Is it really a good idea to simply rewrite a language that people already understand?

On the plus side, now that VGS is dead in-game (no one uses it now), I see a lot of people using voice... so that's cool. I just don't have a mic, so I'm stuck with typing.

But I can guarantee you right now: you will not find even ONE pro-player (on PC) that will think the Circle makes things "easier"... because, you actually have to look what you're typing now, who (other than noobs) does that? How does a graphical interface for something we don't want to see at all help us? Ideally, you should want this to be so simple, logical, intuitive and efficient that it eventually doesn't need an interface at all, without navigating through some menu ...and you know what? You already had that.

  • @Lukash369
It's better yea. But ideally, you should have something where you don't need ANY menu, like, at all.
Veteran players don't use a menu, they know the commands off by heart, we don't use the menu at all, and don't want to... I can see the value for a noob who's still learning the commands; but then again, that's another problem... the whole VGS language has been rewritten.
Everything Veteran players know, all their habits and second-nature muscle memory goes out the window to give noobs a little boost? And it's extremely difficult by comparison, everything used Acronymns previously, D=defend, A=Attack, S=self, GL=good luck, H=hi, etc: all letters that exist in the phrases... it was designed to make memory not much of a requirement. To now remember that "hi" is VCQR makes no inherent sense, just comes across as random. It's like rephrasing BRB (be right back) to something arbitrary like "QHK" I mean, that's how we saw many of the acronyms. Even VBE (enemies BEhind us), VBQ doesn't work with that logic.

More than anyone, the Veteran players are the ones that will be put off by this. The ones who already speak this language. People who haven't learned the old language won't know the difference, but your long die-hard fans are the ones that get screwed here tbh.

  • Personally I think the VGS is fine but it's really confusing to relearn the keybinds. It would be nice if we could have custom keybinds for individual VGS voice lines.

  • i personally think that the redesign is a good thing overall, but it's hard to learn the bindings because of how unrelated the keys are to what you're saying: vcqe for 'good game', vcee for 'woohoo'

also the fact that you cant say something separately feels a little restricting because it allows for less concise communication, even if it's with the little things. because now when i go to say 'woohoo' i say 'awesome' instead and it just kinda sucks.

the only thing that's good is the quick buttons like 'need healing' and 'attack the objective' but things like 'retreat' especially and 'thanks' still have long, confusing button sequencing and it's a bit annoying.

  • @thewickedpearl another sad thought is the removal of laughing and 'quiet' and jokes, that stuff made the game so much more immersive and now it's more bland and theres less creative communication between players 😞

But did the jokes help with stategy and planning?

Jokes are fine to alleviate tension, but do they provide to more consistant consecutive wins? "Jokes" can be an annoyance or distraction [spam].

Again, the old VGS will not mean anything to players who join this game for the first time next week. For those who currently use VGS, how difficult is it to adapt to change? In real life, we are constantly adapting to change. Adapting should be easy as this is only a video game. Heck, if we have a good team, VGS, text or voice chat might not even be used as our teammates will understand their role within the team.

If we want a joke, all we have to do is look at the people/teammates who don't know how to play the game, even after playing for a year or more. Now that's laughable.

New VGS... I hate it just like everyone else.

The system is not only not benefitting new players as was the intention, but it's actually making it harder on veteran players used to the old system. Not only that, but it is missing commands AND STILL HAS THAT DUMB@$$ NEED HEALING COMMAND THAT EVERYONE WANTED GONE TO BEGIN WITH!

I personally take kind of a liking to @Lukash369's idea of the wheel. I was initially worried reading that it would restrict everyone's commands to further down to just 12, but it keeps the other commands. I mean I still will kind of hate new VGS, but it makes the transition easier for everyone. Also, I will say, GET. RID. OF. NEED. HEALING.

Keep down-voting my comments, brothers and sisters. Let's see how things are regarding this "issue" one year from now (after you've quit, because of this, when others have joined).

I'm proudly going for zero rep. T'ankz.

  • @Conrad_Max Cut the passive aggressiveness dude, but I gotta ggree to you though, people are a bit sarcastic with the jokes

I think this change didn’t disturb you because you play using voice chat (written in your signature), And most of the paladins players use VGS as a main way to communicate. And they are very disturbed with this change (includes me)

  • @Conrad_Max i get that, the one thing that actually feels like it's missing is the laugh. that at least, feels like it adds to the game, you're right about the jokes though.

  • the new vgs is ok and all but i was so used to the old one. can we atleast have an option to get the old commands back while players can keep this new one. I would really like to have the old key taps back so its easier for me. as in instead of vf you would do vvvg. having the old vgs as an option would really help me

  • First of all, the new VGS is efficient only for people who tryhard at this game. The people desperately wanting to win rather than have fun. I know Hi-Rez always tryhard to push esport scenes for their games and all, but should we really focus on making it more convenient for competitive players when the game is a constant buggy and broken mess?

Second of all, the new system is very inconvenient for most players that have been playing for a long time. Sure, it is probably easier to grasp for newer players, but for us that took a long time to "master" the old VGS, it is pretty terrible to change it so radically, mostly when the new setting also removes a LOT of voice lines. Most of the time, the games I'm in are straight silent with the new VGS, and the one person trying to use the voice lines, well, they get the silent treatment in return, including from myself as I dunno why bothering learning the new system if it's not to have fun with it.

Third of all, you lose absolutely nothing by giving an option in the settings to re-enable the old VGS. The competitive folks get their new shiny VGS that is not meant to mess around with, and the casuals get to keep their fun voice lines interactions, like the jokes, laughs and such. This is very little effort on the developers' end to do so and would solve the conflict far faster and more easily than anything else mentioned around.

That is my opinion on the matter, as a person that stuck with the game through the hardships of releasing a "full game" without any updates just so it could be ported on the Switch ; as a person that bought almost every skin I could get my hands onto at the time ; as a person that got scammed out of a mount for reaching VIP 5 ; as a person who stuck through despite the addition of battle passes to top all the skins paid for in RNG lootboxes that, unlike Overwatch, are NOT rewarded to you for playing, nor allowing you to purchase those you want directly ; as a player that's been there since before Ying was even added to the game.

Take it as you will, but it shows that people ARE dedicated to the game despite its many flaws, but if you take the fun out of the game, then why even play it? Just so tryhard work their asses off through tears, blood and salt just to have shiny frames or skins to brag about to other people to make them feel inferior to their competitive greatness? Don't make me laugh. You already removed that VGS line from us anyway.

  • The new vgs is ok at best. Maybe it's just my own opinion but I don't care for it much. Too many things are confusing to get to or you have to push the same button patterns for more than one option And can't choose which you want. It could use some improvement but in time I'm sure it will be easy to remember.

  • Could someone explain that why have changed the keywords?

    @KicsitCsicska It’s EvilMojo, you know...

The new VGS killed the game. While before it seemed colorful and even playful at times, now everyone is simply silent. The game is not fun anymore. I want my Khan to be bale to scream that the burgers are ready, and my Jenos to say my planet need's me. It's like the champions lost their personality.

I can just fully agree. I used VGS for funny comments and cheer at the victory/defeat. VEA, VER, VEG, VEW or VVGS (Dang rust-buckets and axe breaking tunnel wyrms). My favorite is Mad Scientist Pip's maniac laughter. Those funny lines made the matches colorful, especially since there are always new ones. US Khan for example and his hilarious comments. Or does someone remember when porn Seris was new? πŸ™‚

Only ingame command I used is "group up". Maybe VBE or VA1-3 at start. It's hard to type VHH while fighting a flank.
